At
some point, all children throw tantrums. Sometimes, it becomes challenging to
manage them in different situations. When your kid starts to throw a tantrum
and nothing seems to be able to distract them, it makes you feel like having
your meltdown too! Especially, if they start throwing tantrums in a public
place, the situation goes out of hand and becomes simply frustrating. After
consulting with child care professionals from the day nurseries in Wimbledon,
we have compiled top tips for parents to deal with the tantrums thrown by their
kids.
Know the reason behind it -
Tantrums occur for many
different reasons. For children between one and two of age, their tantrums are
usually due to not having the ability to communicate about their needs. For
example, milk, food or a diaper change. For children over the age of two years,
tantrums come down to one simple thing, not getting what they want!
Don’t smack or shout -
First and foremost, avoid
disciplining your child by smacking them. We're firmly against this method of
punishment, and there are many other constructive as well as positive ways to
diffuse a tantrum. You are your child’s principal role model, and everything
you do influences them, so teach them to solve issues by talking things through
and listening. If you feel like you’re about to get to this point of being too
much angry, simply walk away from the situation and take a deep breath.
Try to understand them -
Before the situation gets out
of hand, calm your child by talking to them. Try to understand their
perspective and see what it is that’s bothering them. You can’t tackle an issue
without knowing the reason for it in the first place, can you? This offers them
a chance to express their needs and gives them a sense of control.

Distract them -
This is a great way
to try and switch them out of their tantrum. By distracting your child with
something interesting, for example, toys or food, you’ll help them to distract
and forget about their meltdown. It helps to be super excited about the
distraction to get their attention too.
